We Have A Winner!

The random number generator thingy has selected a winner in my competition to celebrate this blog reaching 1000 posts.

It's Iris from Double Half or One Ten Without Ham.

Congratulations Iris.  Could you please email me at seddyed at hotmail dot com with your postal address and let me know which prize you would like.

Thanks to all who entered.  There were some great responses.  Some of you have quite different reasons for reading the blogs you do.  But you also said quite similar things.  Rather than copy and paste the responses, I've tried to summarise the points (I hope I haven't misinterpreted what anyone was saying).

Why I read certain blogs….
I already know the blogger personally.
I have come to know the blogger through their work and so I want to keep reading what they have to say.
The blogger and I are like-minded i.e. both Christian and have shared experiences.
The blog encourages me to press on in my Christian walk.
The blog contains information wrapped up in life experience (not all one or the other).
The blog covers a variety of topics.
The blog makes me laugh, think, feel and consider.
The blog is entertaining.
The blogger is honest about their life i.e. they don’t gloss over life’s difficulties or make out they have a perfect life.
The blog helps me cope with difficult subjects and experiences i.e. death.
The posts aren’t too long.
The spelling and grammar is good.
I learn through the blogger’s advice/opinion and it helps me make decisions about my own life.
I like to read blogs from countries I’ve travelled to.
I like the blog’s photos and historic facts.

Quite a list!

Why do I read the blogs I do?  Well, here's my list.
I know the blogger personally (or know of them i.e. a friend of a friend).

Shared faith (i.e. both Christian) and they encourage me in my faith.

Similar views on some topics.

Same nationality/location.  When I first started blogging, just about all of the blogs I read were by Perth bloggers.  This was because I was a Perth blogger, I could relate to a lot of the things they were writing about (when they mentioned a certain suburb etc, I knew exactly what they were talking about), and there was a strong chance we could actually meet in person one day.  Now I read blogs from all over the world, but I'm still primarily attracted to Australian blogs.

I can learn from them i.e. they are in a different stage of life and have wisdom to share.

The blogger responds to my comments on their blog.  Sounds silly, but I feel a bit stupid leaving comments on some blogs, only to be totally ignored ALL the time.  Sure, you don't need to respond to every comment, but I feel quite unwelcome on some blogs.

Variety.  Some longer, meaty posts.  Some shorter funny posts.  Some photos.  Some jokes.  I don't tend to read blogs that are all about one topic, unless it's a topic I'm really interested in.

A good blogging 'speed'.  When there are too many long posts in a row, I feel like I can't keep up with reading the posts and participating in the conversations in the comments.  On the other hand, I lose interest when the blogger blogs only once every six months or something.

Thanks everyone who participated.  It has been very interesting indeed. :)

The Millennium Giveaway

This is my 1000th post!

It has taken me six years, two months, and 26 days to reach four figures.

I've been wondering why it is that people read blogs, or rather why they choose to read certain blogs and not others.  Why do you read the blogs you do?  Why do you read this blog?

I've tried to brainstorm a few reasons why people may choose to read particular blogs:
  • They know the blogger in real life.
  • The blogger is in the same stage of life as them.
  • A shared faith/worldview.
  • Shared interests.
But really I have no clue.  That's why I'm interested in your answers.  Please leave a comment letting me know why you keep reading the blogs you do?  What keeps you reading?  I won't publish any answers.  Instead, I'll compile a list of reasons, but I won't say who said what.

To celebrate the millennium here at the Sedshed, I'll be having a giveaway.  If you leave a comment with your answers, you'll go into a random draw to win either of these two prizes (winner's choice):

A copy of The Trellis and the Vine which I reviewed here:

or this beautiful Dusty Rose Pink Pendant designed and made by Amanda from her shop Polyclarific:

Even if neither of these prizes really appeal to you, consider entering anyway and think about who you could give them to as a gift. :)

This competition is open to anyone around the world.  I will announce the winner next Friday at 4pm (Australian Western Standard Time) so you have a week. :)

If you would prefer to email me your answers, you may do so to seddyed at hotmail.

Time's Up

The winner is Karen from Life Actually.

For voting in my poll, Karen wins a copy of Moments for Mum which is a devotional book written by my friend, Narelle Nettelbeck.

Thankful to those who voted/commented.  The posts that received votes were:

Introvert Peg in an Extrovert Hole
Facebook Etiquette
5 Things I've Learnt in 10 Years of Following Christ

I don't think I'll be doing another poll for a while, but when I do, I'll have a prize that's easily postable and suits all currencies so that readers around the world can enter.

Karen, could you please email your postal address to seddyed at hotmail dot com and I will get your prize on its way. :)

Back to normal posts tomorrow!

Poll and Book Giveaway Deadline Extended!

I need a few more votes in my poll! (thanks Karen for voting)

Don't forget by voting and then writing YES in a comment, you can be in the running for this prize (see previous post).
If you're using a reader, please click through to my blog and vote in the poll.

Men, this would make a great present for your wife. :)

Even, if you've already read or own the book, your vote is appreciated.

I've extended the deadline to noon Tuesday 28th February.

Cheers :)

I realise that Facebook would be the ideal vehicle to promote my blog and this giveaway.  Why, even the brand of cat litter I buy for Ebony has its own Facebook page.  Yet I have deliberately chosen not to link to my blog from my Facebook profile for personal reasons which I won't go into here.  Therefore, I realise I will have to be content with a small, but valued, readership.

Sedshed Favourite Post of 2011 Poll...and Your Chance to Win!

It's that time of the year again!

Yes, evidently I never learn since I'm about to go away on holidays and leave you all with...another poll!  Yay!  Yay!  Come on, some enthusiasm please, people! :)

I've decided that this time you all need a bit of encouragement.  For the first time in the Sedshed's 5.5 year history, I'm going to do my first giveaway.  Tempted?

Here's the prize:

This is a devotional book for mums written by my friend, Narelle Nettelbeck.  Narelle and I first met two years ago via a mutual friend, Amanda.  We became Facebook friends and chatted on there about writing before meeting in person a few months later.  I have been encouraged by Narelle's writing even though I am not a mum; she has a gift for encouraging others, particularly mums who are aiming to serve Christ in everyday life.  I have given away this devotional to quite a few people now (they make great baby shower gifts).  Narelle has since written a second devotional called Thankful For Dishes which is available at Koorong.

So, if you would like to win a copy of Moments For Mum, here's what you have to do:

Vote in my poll by choosing which post you enjoyed the most on this blog in 2011 (see the list below).  I have chosen my Top 12, but if you like one that is not listed, you are welcome to vote for it by leaving a comment.  You may vote for more than one post if you like.

Leave a comment saying YES if you would like to win the book.  When I return on Friday 24th February, I will publish all comments and randomly select a winner using an online random number generator thingy.  I will then announce the winner and ask that winner to email me so I can arrange to get the prize to them.  (You do not have to be a blogger to enter, but I need at least a first name in the comments).

Unfortunately this competition is only open to Australian residents.  Sorry international readers - next time I will pick a different prize.  But please still vote.

Here's my Top 12:

Why 2011 Won't Be 'The Year of the Pessimist'
The Pendulum: Grace and Godliness
Life With AS
The New Kid on the Block
The Silent Generation
Introvert Peg in an Extrovert Hole
Facebook 'Friends'
The Lovebook
I'm George...They're Annes
Facebook Etiquette
5 Things I've Learnt in 10 Years of Following Christ
I'm a Side Plate or a Saucer

Thank you for reading!  Please vote away... :)

Perhaps next time a bribe might be in order. ;)

Would You Read This Book?: 2012 Poll

I've decided to take a break from blogging this week.

But rather than leave you all with nothing, I want to ask you all to participate in the Sedshed Christian Book Poll for 2012.

Below is a list of Christian books that I've reviewed/mentioned on this blog with links to where I have reviewed them.  I would like to know if you have ever picked up a book because of a review read on the blog.  The key phrase is because of a review you read on this blog.  If you've already read a book before I reviewed it, that doesn't count.  I want to know if you have gone out and bought or borrowed or plan to read a book because you read a review on here and thought, Hmmm that sounds interesting.

You can vote for more than one book if you like.

The reason I'm asking you all to do this is because I've signed up for Matthias Media's Free for Bloggers program.  Matthias Media send me one of their books (I get to choose from a shortlist).  I then read it, review it on my blog and link to my review on their site.  I've been reading their books for years and have enjoyed and been challenged by them.  I'm looking forward to getting stuck into The Trellis and the Vine this week.  Expect a review soon.

One thing I never want to do is 'sell out' on this blog.  I plan to review honestly.  One blog I used to really enjoy has now been completely taken over by advertising.  Every post is a review of different makeup products.  Boring!  That's NOT why I'm participating in this program.

Here's the list:

Daniel's Diet by Philip Bridgeman
Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges
The Peacemaker by Ken Sande
If I Were God I'd End All the Pain by John Dickson
No Compromise: The Life Story of Keith Green by Melody Green and David Hazard
A Foot in Two Worlds by John Chapman
Blame it on the Brain? by Edward T Welch
Beyond Greed by Brian Rosner
666 And All That by John Dickson and Greg Clarke
Charles Spurgeon by JC Carlile
The Heart of the Artist by Rory Noland
Simply Christianity by John Dickson
Refuting Compromise by Jonathan Sarfati
The Essence of Darwinism by Kirsten Birkett
The Busy Christian's Guide to Busyness by Tim Chester
When I Don't Desire God by John Piper

Apologies to anyone reading who is not at all interested in Christian books.  I'll be back in a week with something different.

It would be really great if I could get at least 10 people to participate in this poll.  Of course, if none of these books interest you, that's fine.  But if they do, please take the time to let me know.

The poll closes at midday (Australian Western Standard Time) next Monday 6th February.
Please click through to vote if you are using a reader.
Have a great week....and poll away.

The Votes Are In

Only five people voted in my poll....five.  I think I'm going to cry :(

But seriously thank you to those five.  The results are in and I was somewhat surprised as some posts I didn't think would score anything got a vote, and others I thought would attract votes ended up being voteless.

There was a seven-way tie (voters could vote for more than one post):

Marriage 101: Date Night
The Pendulum: Predestination and Free Will
Don't Worry Your Life Away
Not When, But If
Friday Focus: But Even If He Does Not

The Sedshed Turns 4

My bloggy celebrated it's 4th birthday on Saturday.  Yes, I first started blogging on the 19th June 2006.

Unfortunately I didn't bake it (myself) a cake, but I did give it a new outfit instead.  If you use a reader, click through to see my blog's new look.  It is one of the standard Blogger templates (not game or skilled enough to try creating or editing a template yet), but it is books which is very 'me' being an avid reader and a former librarian and all, AND I have a picture of my house on there.  Oh and there is now a 'Like' option on the end of each post, so if you don't feel like writing a comment, but just like the post, you can do so....just like Facebook :)

To celebrate, I've decided to do a couple of polls.  If you're a reader of this blog, please say whether you use a reader or if you come directly to the URL, via a link from another blog etc.  Then for those who indicate they use a reader, I would like to know which reader you use.

Sound easy enough?  Ok then, please do the poll....just for me :)

And the Winner is......Get On Your Soapbox

The results are in. Thank you to those five people who voted, I appreciate you taking the couple of minutes it took to click a few buttons. Although, I was disaapointed to discover I was getting far more direct hits than there were votes. I am a little discouraged that people, who appear to be regular readers, couldn't take a few minutes to vote ANONYMOUSLY but, oh well....you get that.

3 votes
Get On Your Soapbox
2 votes
Calling All Theoblogians
Marriage 101
1 vote
Sarah's School of Dating
5 Things
Diary of a Wedding Planning Machine
Friday Funny
Friendships
The Pendulum

I still can't believe that Get On Your Soapbox was the winner! This is the one where I have a rant, people, and this is the series I was recently considering doing less of, because I don't want to be seen as someone who just rants all the time. I want to be a bit more positive. But, oh well. I will continue to rant if you wish.

Rant forthcoming :)

500 Posts!

WOOHOO! I've made it halfway to 1000. Boy, am I glad I didn't shut my blog down in January (although I've had a few more of THOSE feelings along the way).

To celebrate, please leave a comment or vote on my poll on the right to let me know which of my 'series' you enjoy most. You can vote more than once if you wish. I'd just like to see what my few loyal readers enjoy most....for curiosity's sake :)

Please take a moment or two to vote. Thanks!

The Pendulum: The Hitchhiker's Guide

Hmmm, here's an interesting dilemma.

Eight days ago, after church, Duncan and I were about to head home after lunch when we noticed a guy probably in his early thirties sitting on a bench with a bag and a guitar. We assumed he was going to start busking but as we were getting into our car, he approached us and asked for a lift. I was already in the car by this stage and I froze when I heard Duncan's cheery voice say, "Yeah sure, no worries mate. Hop in."

This guy had hitched from Perth to Dalwallinu and was on his way to Geraldton. Duncan politely told him that he'd be better going to Geraldton via Brand Highway but that we'd take him to Wubin (where lots of trucks stop) and someone would surely pick him up from there. The guy asked where we were going and seemed to want us to drop him off in Buntine. Duncan talked him out of it by explaining that Buntine was more isolated and he was less likely to get picked up. Plus it wouldn't be fun waiting for hours in the rain.

It was the longest ten minutes of my life and although I tried to be pleasant and make conversation, I was shaking. You hear all these horror stories and just two months ago, a psychopath who bashed a Dally service station owner tried to hitch a lift with a local woman. The guy, as if reading my mind, said "Don't worry, I'm not a serial killer." He seemed nice enough and even offered to pay us when we dropped him off but Duncan refused because we were going that way anyway. It made me wonder though.....if he has money, why didn't he just get a bus?

After we dropped him off, I told Duncan how fearful I was and he said he only did it because the man approached him directly. If someone was hitching along a road, he wouldn't have stopped if I was in the car but, depending on the person, he might have if he were alone or with another bloke.

I've always been wary of picking up hitchhikers because, although many are harmless, there are always the unsavoury ones. Yet, I know some Christians (including women) who will stop for anyone and justify their decision by referring to Genesis 19 where Lot hosts the two angels and Hebrews 13:2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. In this case, giving someone a lift is not really 'entertaining' but they insist that they don't want to disobey Jesus in case he is setting a test for them.

The question I have is....should we consider personal safety or does that mean we aren't trusting God enough or aren't loving enough? Or is picking up a potentially dangerous person putting God to the test?

Please leave a comment with your views or vote on the poll on the right.

The Birthday That Almost Never Was

The Sedshed turns three today. Happy Birthday dear bloggy :)

And to think I almost shut it down in January....this milestone would never have been reached. I'm off to have some chocolate to celebrate!

In celebration of the Sedshed's 3rd birthday, I'd like you to think back over its history (or for as long as you've been reading) and let me know what you think was the most memorable post. Was it a post that made you laugh? Or did it make you cry? Did it make you angry? Or encourage you? Or rebuke you? Did it change your life? (ok maybe that's a bit extreme hehe).

Please vote by leaving a comment (anonymous if you prefer).

P.S. If I get no votes I'll be very sad :(

The Pendulum: Christians and Defacto Guests

Duncan and I were having a long discussion on the weekend about a possible dilemma we could soon face.

Since we're in the middle of nowhere, when guests come to visit from Perth or elsewhere they really have no choice but to stay with us. There is no other accommodation in Buntine and Dalwallinu is about 50km away which isn't practical if we want to spend time with them.

The issue we were discussing is what do we do when a defacto couple want to stay with us?
Obviously, we're Christians and we believe sex is for marriage between a man and a woman but how do we relate to defacto couples with both grace and truth? Should we put them in separate beds (we have two spare rooms) or just let them have the double bed? I realise this issue might be different if we had adult children who were in defacto relationships and wanted to bring their partner with them to stay with us. In this instance we, as their parents, have some authority over them because it is our house and they are to honour our wishes. But if the couple are two adults who are family or friends, what do we do then?

One on hand, I am leaning towards just letting them have the double bed even though I don't agree with their lifestyle. They are adults and it's their lives and how they choose to live is up to them. It makes me feel preachy or like a mother figure telling them what to do.

But on the other hand, I am wondering if just letting them do what they want is like giving a thumbs up to sex before marriage or indicating that while I have my beliefs, I don't care about how they live. Also it is our house and I guess we do have some rights to enforce limits on our guests like asking a smoker to smoke outside for example.

Basically I want to love these couples and do what is pleasing in God's sight. Obviously my main prayer is for them to know God. What would you do in this situation? Or have you already been in a similar one? Please vote in the poll on the right.

Why Am I Doing This?

It's probably a question that many bloggers ask themselves from time to time.

After a few months of thinking about this, I'm asking the question publicly.....

Should the Sedshed continue on in 2009 or should I pull the plug after two and a half years of blogging?

As I said, I've been thinking about this for months now, probably as far back as September so it isn't a brief moment of frustration. I'm just wondering whether it's worth me having a blog. I mean, the point of this blog is to generate discussion, encourage, debate, inspire and provide an outlet for me where I can interact with others.

But for months, nothing much has been happening. I try to ask questions and I still get no feedback (yes, the comments debate AGAIN). I know a few people lurk on my blog but never comment yet I don't exactly know how many or who. A few people who read this blog in the beginning seem to have fallen away which indicates to me that they have lost interest in what I write. Some blogs I really enjoy are either no more or irregular as the bloggers have either faced big life changes or just lost interest.

I don't know if it's worth keeping going for possibly only a handful of readers (my stats seem to indicate this is the case). I'm annoyed with myself for thinking this way because I really dislike the numbers game and have always believed that if this blog helps ONE person then it's worth it. But now I'm really questioning that thought. I think it's partly because I'm writing a book and I struggle with the 'writing for the market' mentality. I don't believe in compromising my creativity but if nobody seems to enjoy what you're writing, then it makes you question whether you're any good. Writers need feedback. I don't want a book there that nobody reads. Same as I don't want a blog that nobody reads otherwise why would I put it on the net? I might as well just have a paper diary.

When I voiced these thoughts to Duncan, he asked, "Do you enjoy blogging?". To that I replied, "Yes!". I love blogging, I really do and part of me would be very sad if it were to end now. I would lose so much but would the blogosphere lose anything by my departure? The honest answer is: probably not.

I've been trying to find more blogs to read (not that I don't enjoy the ones I currently read) and interact more but I don't just choose blogs to read for the sake of it. They must grab me in some way otherwise it's just sympathy commenting and I'm sure none of us like that.

So I'm going to have a poll to settle things once and for all. To those who are out there, I need you to vote. Do you want the Sedshed to continue? Or would you like me to write about something in particular? Does what I write interest you even in some small way? If so, then please vote anonymously on the poll. I will probably need around 10 'yes' votes to be convinced to keep going (and I'd appreciate it if everyone only voted once). You have six days, people. SIX days. I will continue to blog until I know the verdict.

I am grateful for those who regularly visit and comment on my blog. It has been great 'meeting' you all.

Part of me is scared silly by how this poll might turn out.

Living Out Romans 14

A couple of weekends ago, Duncan and I were in Perth for a wedding and on Sunday morning we decided to visit our old church before heading home. One of the elders was preaching on Romans 14 and it was one of the best sermons I've heard recently. Perhaps because I'd just been thinking about 'liberty garden' issues myself and it's strange how God has continued to get me thinking about how to live out Romans 14 in my own life and then I hear a sermon on it. God works in mysterious ways.

Ollie spoke about how he had grown up in a home with no TV, no alcohol, no dancing etc etc. He explained that this was his parents' view of how to live as Christians and when he moved to Australia from the UK, he struggled with seeing Christians partake in all of the above and not judging them. Now he partakes in many of the things his parents didn't. I think whatever our upbringing, we all struggle with being judged and being judgemental.

I'm going to relate this post to my previous one on Christians and alcohol. I am convinced that it is ok for Christians to drink just not to get drunk. I fully respect other Christians' decisions not to drink. Duncan and I both drink, Duncan more than me, but we both want to be careful that our drinking doesn't become a stumbling block for others.

What I've been struggling with lately is how to do I NOT let my drinking be a stumbling block? What would that look like practically? I always think of the term 'stumbling block' in relation to addiction for some reason, like I can see why I wouldn't drink in front of an alcoholic. But what if it's someone who just doesn't like alcohol as in not a temptation issue but a sin issue. What if they're like my friends in the previous post and would probably give you a disapproving look if they happened to spy a beer in your fridge?

Duncan and I disagree how we should handle it if staunch non-drinkers come to our house. Obviously we're not going to crack open a beer in front of them although Ollie did mention in his sermon that it's tempting for the 'strong' person to try to show off their freedom in front of the 'weak'. Often when I feel like I'm being judged by a non-drinker (even though I'm not drinking in front of them), I get the urge to crack open that beer, skull it in front of them and shout "Freedom!....FREEDOM!" like William Wallace in Braveheart. But I never act on that urge....that would be very unloving.

While I don't want to shove alcohol in a non-drinker's face nor do I want to 'hide my colours' in my own house. Other people know we drink, it's not like we're pretending to be teetotallers and have successfully managed to fool everyone. When a non-drinker comes over, Duncan takes the bottles of whiskey and wine off the top of the fridge where they usually reside and hides them in the pantry. I understand why he does it because one time a mate of his came over who had struggled with drinking too much in the past. But I've told him I don't get why he does this when it's just someone who doesn't believe in drinking, as in there is no temptation or addiction involved. He said it's because it's better to avoid any possible arguments with the guest/s. I'm of the view, that while I respect others and will do my best not to offend them, this is our house and when people visit they need to respect us for who we are. Romans 14 works both ways. The strong are not to put stumbling blocks in the path of the weak but the weak are not to judge the strong either.

In one way I can see Duncan's point...I don't want to start arguments. But I don't want to have to hastily rearrange everything when a non-drinker comes over. Now obviously not every non-drinker cares about whether other Christians drink or not.....I'm talking about ones who would disapprove of our choice to drink and show by either their words or facial expressions. Am I being selfish? A friend who agrees with me pointed out that we can't always hide stuff anyway. For example, some things have to stay in the fridge and can't be moved so if the guest looks in the fridge and sees beer there there's nothing much we can do anyway.

Please vote on my poll on the right or leave your opinion about this dilemma in the comments section. What would you do in our situation?

Coming Up At The Sedshed....

Well, not long after I typed my last post, the laptop carked it by getting the blue screen of death. This is only a few weeks after my desktop PC decided it needed a new motherboard. So now we're computer-less and photos of our Tassie trip are looking unlikely for the next few weeks at least.

At the moment, I'm using a friend's computer and thought I'd get you all excited about all of my new series that are coming up after I get home. So again....don't nobody go nowhere.
  • Madam Sarah's Fine College of Etiquette.....my unique view of manners in today's age and beware - this is no finishing school.
  • The Pendulum......all about those 'grey' areas and how I strive for balance when it comes to certain issues. Sound intriguing? Then hang around....
  • Lyrics I Can Relate To......I'll post some lyrics that are relevant to my life at the moment or just about issues I'm musing about.
  • Small Groups....in this series Ill examine the pros and cons and all kinds of issues associated with small groups. I'll mainly be focusing on Bible study/homegroups but will refer to groups of all kinds.
  • From Head to Hand - All About Writing......for those who (like me) have a passion or just a general curiosity about how to be a writer. I'll focus on characters, plots, developing ideas, basing your writing on 'real life', how to get published and more.
  • Friendships - the complex issues that arise in our relationships with each other and why we struggle to be 'friends forever'.

Vote on the poll on the right for the one that interests you the most.
